Tips for Keeping Your Kids Safe at Amusement Parks
- Follow the park’s safety rules. Many rides have their own safety rules, and it is important for you to follow them. This is particularly true on dangerous rides such as rollercoasters. If the park says your child is too small to ride a rollercoaster, listen to that safety advice. If you do not think the safety restraints on a ride are properly fitted to your body type, do not ride the ride. Most importantly, stay seated and do not stand up before a ride comes to a stop. This is a safety rule that, if not followed, can result in a catastrophic injury.
- Know your and your child’s health issues and limitations. If you or your child has a health condition or an injury (such as a back problem or a heart condition) that could be worsened by a ride at an amusement park, simply do not ride. At amusement parks, there are often warning signs about risks for visitors with underlying conditions. It is extremely important to heed these warnings and to think carefully about your own physical limitations.
- Avoid restricted areas. If an area of a theme park is blocked off or restricted, do not let your child enter that area. There are many reasons that an amusement park will close off a particular area, and it often has to do with dangers to the public. If your child attempts to climb a fence or to move beyond a barricade, he or she could be risking a serious injury. If you or your child lose a personal belonging (for instance, if your cellphone falls into a restricted area), do not attempt to retrieve it yourself. Instead, contact an amusement park employee to retrieve it. Check the safe amusement rides for kids by http://sinoamusementrides.com/kids-rides-for-sale/.

VR Gives Old Amusement Park New Purpose
Building a new ride is pricey, even for a big attraction like SeaWorld. For small parks, with low budgets, it can be an existential bet. VR, though, has given parks an opportunity to breathe new life into traditional rides, saving money as they do so. Adding VR to a rollercoaster does, however, present challenges beyond those involved when the headset wearer is either stationary or using his own muscles to move around. Matching what is seen with the sensation of movement is crucial. Get it wrong and the result is nausea. Yet, when executed properly, the pairing of rollercoasters and VR, two things that can both, by themselves, be nauseating experiences, actually helps reduce the risk of sickness.
One cause of VR-induced nausea is high latency—too long a delay between users moving their heads (and thus their expected view of the virtual world) and the headset’s response to that movement. High latency sends confusing signals to the brain and prompts “cue conflict”, the body’s response to receiving mixed signals from the eyes, which provide vision, and the ears, which contain the organs that register movement and balance. In the 1990s, when VR was still in its infancy, high latency was common. As the technology has improved, though, latency has decreased, minimising the risk of nausea.
But not, however, eliminating it. For there is a second cause of cue conflict in VR amsuement rides: the eyes seeing movement that the body is not experiencing. And this is something rollercoasters can help solve, by providing the missing experience of movement. Match the signal from the headset to the coaster’s motion and the brain’s inputs from eyes and ears will also match.
That match, though, must be precise. Even a small discrepancy between the headset’s image and the coaster’s motion can have a drastically nauseating effect. To ensure perfect correspondence, VR firms such as Figment Productions, a British company that worked on the new Kraken ride, map the entire track using devices called inertial measurement units (IMUs) before the visuals are created.
These IMUs are sophisticated versions of the widgets that smartphones and tablet computers use to work out which way up the screen display should be. Simon Reveley, Figment’s boss, says the firm chose these sensors because their ability to detect changes in movement is similar to that of a blindfolded human being—which is exactly what someone wearing an immersive headset is. IMUs are, in other words, adept at sensing alterations in motion and path, while being poor at registering speed or distance travelled.
Once the IMU map has been made, video can be created to match it. To make sure everything stays in synchrony, each of Kraken’s cars is fitted with IMUs that compare its behaviour during an actual run with the map employed to make the video. Any discrepancy is used to adjust the speed of the video, in order to preserve verisimilitude.
The VR augmentation of rides is unlikely to remain limited to rollercoasters. Six Flags, one of the world’s biggest amusement-park companies, is experimenting with adding VR to gaint drops—devices in which the rider experiences several seconds of free-fall before being decelerated for a safe landing. Park visitors, then, should expect to don more headsets when they strap in for their favourite rides.

What causes the feeling of "weightlessness" on pendulum rides?
Riders often experience near-weightlessness as they approach the top of a pendulum ride. If the ride is the type that makes a complete 360-degree circle, they experience a feeling of complete weightlessness. Read more here.
Feelings of weightlessness are not due to a decrease in forces of gravitation; people do not feel forces of gravity. What you feel is the force of a seat (or other external object) pushing on your body with a force to counteract gravity's downward pull. A 180-pound person at rest in his office chair experiences the seat pushing upwards on his body with a force of 180 pounds. Yet at the top of a pendulum ride, the same 180-pound person will feel less than this normal sensation of weight. At the very top of the pendulum ride, riders begin to fall out of their seats. Since a 180-pound person is no longer in full contact with his seat, the seat is no longer pushing on him with 180 pounds of force. Thus, the rider has a sensation of weighing less than his normal weight.
Why do riders experience high g-forces on pendulum rides?
As riders pass through the bottom of the circular arc, they often experience high g-forces. Once again, these g-forces are not evidence of increasing forces of gravitation, but the result of increases in the amount of force applied by the seat upon their bodies. Understanding this demands a little information about circular motion.
The motion of an object in a circle requires that there be a force directed toward the center of the circle (sometimes called a "centripetal force"). This means that at the bottom of the circular swing, there must be an upward force (since the circle's center is upward). Gravitational forces are always directed downward upon a rider's body; thus, gravitational forces cannot meet this centripetal force requirement. The seat must supply the centripetal force, pushing upwards on the rider with a force greater than gravity's downward pull. For a 180-pound person, the seat might have to supply 360 pounds of upward pull. This is twice the usual amount experienced by our 180-pound rider. For this reason, we would say the rider experiences 2 g's of force (a seat force that is 2 times the gravity force).
The most common pendulum rides include giant frisbee ride, pirate ship ride, and kamikaze ride.

Inclusive indoor playground with autism-friendly equipment
Finally, a place where you don’t have to say I’m sorry.
That’s the slogan for the new We Rock the Spectrum indoor play area that opened last week in Fenton designed to provide all children, including those with autism spectrum disorder, an inclusive and safe place to play.
“When we go to a playground, I have to say ‘sorry’ all the time, and it’s not because I have a bad kid,” said Tom Tipton, 57, of Kirkwood, who owns the facility with his wife, Cynthia Tipton, 45.
The Tiptons have a son, Noland, 9, who was diagnosed four years ago with high-functioning autism. What used to by known as Asperger’s syndrome, it is characterized as having normal cognitive development but difficulty with social and emotional skills.
While playing, Noland would sometimes cut in line, talk incessantly about one topic or get very frustrated quickly. Tom Tipton said he felt like parents were looking and thinking, “Oh my god, who is that kid?”
His heart broke as he watched his son end up playing alone. “He wants friends, but he has difficulty communicating in a way that makes people feel comfortable,” Tipton said. “As a dad, that’s tough.”
When he and his wife read an article five months ago about the We Rock the Spectrum franchise, they went to work right away. “We looked at each other and said, ‘Yes,’” Tipton said, “and we’ve been running to this moment ever since.”
The play area includes 10 pieces of equipment designed for children with sensory processing disorders, which means the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information received by the senses. Studies suggest that more than 75 percent of people with autism have significant symptoms of sensory processing disorder, but the reverse is not true. Many with sensory processing disorders do not have autism.
The symptoms of the disorder come in a broad spectrum of severity. One person may over-respond to a sensation and find clothing, physical contact, light, sound or food to be unbearable. Another might under-respond and show little reaction to stimulation, even pain. Some may confuse messages from the muscles and joints, causing poor posture and motor skills. Others have an insatiable need for sensation.
Therapy usually takes place in a sensory-rich gym. The therapist guides the child through activities that foster appropriate responses to sensations in an active and fun way. Over time, the appropriate behavior becomes more habitual, enabling children to take part in normal activities and preventing emotional, social and academic problems.
The We Rock the Spectrum gym is not meant to replace therapy but to augment it, says founder Dina Kimmel of Los Angeles.
As the mother of an autistic child, Kimmel found that her son’s limited hours with his therapists were not enough. So, she built a sensory gym in her home, according to her story on the company’s website.
Kimmel’s son thrived, and her older daughter enjoyed playing on the equipment designed for children as well. The siblings also enjoyed playing together, which gave her and her husband joy and relief. Since many families don’t have the means or space to put a gym in their homes, Kimmel had the idea of building one in the community.
She opened the first gym in Southern California in 2009, and it quickly reached capacity. The demand led her to create a nationwide franchise, with Fenton as the 22nd location and 24 more cities in the works. Kimmel travels the country providing training and support and attended the Feb. 13 grand opening in Fenton.
“This being our first in the Midwest makes it extra special,” she said, “and the Tiptons couldn’t be a better family to bring awareness to the community.”
The play equipment includes a zip line, a trampoline, swings and climbing structures that build coordination, strength, balance and focus. But the purpose goes beyond the physical. “A healthy and safe environment where they can just play and be accepted is a big part in building comfort and building confidence,” Tipton said. The gym also includes an arts and crafts space, an area with toddler toys and a quiet break room with books and soothing lights. A large multi-purpose room is available for parties and classes.
Infants up to kids age 13 can play at their leisure for $12 per child and $10 per sibling. Packages are also available. A nonprofit, My Brother Rocks the Spectrum Foundation, helps needy families cover the cost.
If not at capacity, parents can drop off their children after completing permission forms. For children needing more intense supervision, the Tiptons said they are willing to organize one-on-one time with a staff member.
The staff includes volunteers and occupational therapy students, he said, all given tools to diffuse a disagreement or frustration, encourage play and keep children safe.
Tipton said he plans to add classes like yoga and music, as well as spring break and summer camps. If needed, times for older teens could also be set aside.
Based on feedback from other locations, Tipton expects 30 to 40 percent of children using the gym will have a sensory disorder; while the rest will be siblings, friends and others from the surrounding area.
He is thankful to provide a place where children and parents can experience acceptance, understanding and support. “I think we can help people,” he said.

Drop Tower Ride Experience
There is nothing like the anticipation and pure exhilaration of a really tall drop tower. You climb steadily up and up as the world falls below you and your vista of the park becomes wider and clearer you feel free. The anticipation is amazing and contagious as everyone is waiting for the payoff, stomachs tighten, mouths open, eyes close and then WOOOOOOOO!!
There is nothing like it! Great news!
Dollywood has a world-class drop tower extreme ride opening soon and it is a humdinger. The giant drop is a 230 foot tall tower located across from Lumber Jack’s Pizza. The manufacturer is Funtime Rides from Austria and it is their first installation of their Skyfall attraction.
The 24-seat gondola rotates as it climbs the tall tower at a steady 1.5 meters-per-second providing incredible views of the Great Smoky Mountains and of Dollywood. When you reach the top, take a deep breath and enjoy the beauty of Dollywood from 20 stories in the air.
Wait. Wait. Wait. DROP!
As you freefall down the tower at a maximum scale speed of about 77 miles-per-hour your body feels 3.2 negative g’s so you had better hold onto your stomach! Once the magnetic brakes engage and smoothly slow you to a stop your total ride experience will last about 2 minutes. I don’t know about you but I am ready to get back in line!
I’ll see you in the queue! For all of you fact geeks out there, here is the tech information on the new Funtime Drop Line at Dollywood. Enjoy!

What is the working principle behind the top spin ride in amusement parks?
The Top Spin consists of two upright support arms, two mechanical sweep arms connected by a steel rod, and a gondola containing two rows of seats.
The sweep arms generate motion through 4 DC electric motors connected to the middle of the sweep arms through a gearbox. In order to help balance the weight of the gondola and riders, there are 4 counterweights connected to the opposite ends of the sweep arms. In other words, the top spin ride is a spin ride.
The gondola itself is free to swing, independent of the sweep arms due to bearings between the connection. However, the sweep arms contain a pneumatic caliper which operates much like the brake system on a car. When desired, the sweep arms can lock the rotation of the gondola for loading/unloading, or part of the ride program where the gondola is held at a certain position.
The purpose of this ride is to generate swinging and flipping maneuvers for the thrill of the passengers. For most ride cycles, the sweep arms hoist the gondola to a specific height. At that point the rotation of the gondola is locked, and the sweep arms begin rotating to build up energy. The gondola is then unlocked, and free to swing or flip, creating dazzling visuals.
So to reiterate, the ride builds up potential energy from hoisting the gondola, locks it in an offset position, then releases it. Once released, gravity takes over (also aided by the ride motors), and the gondola will perform flips until it runs out of energy. Depending on the program, the ride may also hold the vehicle nearly inverted for a period of time to create a feeling of “hang time”. Click more.
HUSS Top Spins come with 9 pre-set programs built into the control panel, though most parks only run around 2–3 of them for average operation. This ensures to keep the line moving, and make it easier to maintain the machine.
There is also a manual drive mode that the ride can be operated in, but this is usually left for maintenance technicians when performing test cycles or repairs.

Acceleration of Rings in Aerotrim (Human Gyroscope)
I'm working on a graphic simulation (just for fun, for an open-source screensaver) of an Aerotrim - a "human gyroscope", one of those exercise/training machines with a human in the middle, perched on a ring that swivels on an axis with respect to another ring, which swivels on an axis perpendicular to the first axis, on another ring. (AFAICT there could be 2 or 3 such axes that turn, each at right angles to the next. If I can simulate 2 axes / 3 rings, that would be sufficient. A general solution for n rings would be lovely.
Simulating the thing turning, with each axis rotating at a constant rate, is no problem. But it would "feel" more real if I could apply some realistic acceleration from the interaction between the rings and the mass of the rider.
In the Youtube videos, you sometimes see a bystander push on one of the rings, to help get the rider going. Not only does that ring accelerate, but others start spinning too. And the pushed ring does not accelerate smoothly, but undergoes resistance from the other rings, apparently transferring acceleration to them.
I am not up on angular momentum, torque, and all that, so answers will need to take my ignorance into account, though I'm obviously willing to learn a few things as necessary.
I don't feel like it's necessary to take into account the asymmetry of the person's mass - modeling the person as a point mass in the center of the rings should be fine, I think. In other words I don't plan on modeling the way that the rider accelerates the rings by leaning one way or another.
I was thinking that in order to make things a little more interesting, I would have the program occasionally apply a force like a hand pushing on one of the rings. I can figure out what the torque on that ring would be if it were independent of the others, but I don't know to model a set of 3 rings connected on axes.
Any thoughts on how I could model the interaction between the rings, each affecting the others? Simplifications are fine. My intent is not to discover new phenomena through accurate physical modeling, but to create a visual display that looks more realistic than just rings turning at constant rates.
Nowadays, human gyroscope has been used as entertainment equipment popular in amusement park.

Keeping Kids Safe on Roller Coasters and Other Thrill Rides
In summer, thrill-seekers will test their bravery on extreme roller-coaster rides -- twisting, flipping and spinning, all while trying to keep their lunch down.
Although the height and speed of roller coasters can look scary, amusement park rides aren't dangerous as long as people follow the rules, said Kathryn Woodcock, an amusement-ride expert at Ryerson University in Toronto. In addition to this, you need to choose sale roller coaster for kids like the wacky worm roller coaster.
To keep kids safe, Woodcock offers up these safety tips:
Height requirements for amusement-park rides are intended to weed out children who are too young to enjoy the ride or who don't have the muscle strength needed to withstand its forces. Even if a child meets the height requirements, parents should exercise caution and determine if the ride is really suitable for their child.
Make sure a ride's lap bar secures children, particularly if they are slim or tall for their age.
Adults accompanying children on rides should pay close attention to the child they are supervising. Make sure any companion chosen to ride with a child is capable of handling an emergency situation.
Listen to ride operators and adhere to their rules. Children who are placed on rides that are too mature for them could panic and try to exit the ride before it's over. They also may feel traumatized when the ride is over.
Pay attention to the condition of the thrill rides. If lap bars do not latch properly or if brakes are not holding well, alert the ride's operator or one of the park's guest-relations professionals immediately.
Be particularly careful about inflatable slides and bouncy castles, which can result in sprains and fractures. Check to make sure they are adequately supervised, properly installed and secured to the ground.
Parents also should teach children to exercise caution when riding amusement rides, including following the rules even if friends are encouraging them to do otherwise, reading all posted signs and avoiding trying to make dull rides more exciting by engaging in risky behavior, Woodcock said.

Bumper Cars Physics
Bumper Cars
Physics
Glossary Newton's third law of motion comes into play on the bumper cars. This law, the law of interaction, says that if one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body. It's the law of action-reaction, and it helps to explain why you feel a jolt when you collide with another bumper car.
How do bumper cars work?
Dodgem rides are designed so that the cars can collide without much danger to the riders. Each car has a large rubber bumper all around it, which prolongs the impact and diffuses the force of the collision.
The bumper cars manufactured by different amusement park rides companies run on electricity, carried by a pole on the back of the car that leads up to a wire grid in the ride's ceiling. This grid carries the electricity that runs the car. The electrical energy carried to the cars from the grid is converted to kinetic energy, some of which is converted to heat.
What happens to the drivers?
When bumper cars collide, the drivers feel a change in their motion and become aware of their inertia. Though the cars themselves may stop or change direction, the drivers continue in the direction they were moving before the collision. This is why it's important to wear a seat belt while driving a real car since otherwise, you could suffer injury being thrown forward in a collision.
The masses of the drivers also affect the collisions. A difference in mass between two bumper car riders will mean that one rider experiences more change in motion than the other (or more of a jolt). The type of collision, velocity of the cars, and mass of the individual drivers all come into play in bumper car collisions.

The History of Ferris Wheel
PAST: The Birth of the Ferris Wheel
In 1893, the world turned its attention to the American city of Chicago, where that year’s World Fair was being held. Besides being only the third city in the United States to host the exposition, after the 1876 fair in Philadelphia and 1884 fain in New Orleans, it also marked an important anniversary for the New World. In honor of Christopher Columbus’s landing in the Americas four hundred years earlier, the 1893 Fair was officially known as the World’s Fair: Columbian Exposition.ferris wheel history
To ensure the City of Chicago shined in the world’s eyes, the city recruited the best American designers, artists, architects, engineers, and scientists to put on a show that was full of innovation and splendor. For those wanting to ensure they were able to get the best view possible of the elaborate amusement attractions, it was necessary to summon the bravery to travel 264 feet above the fairgrounds. Fortunately, they were able to do this in comfort and relative safety, thanks to what was perhaps the jewel of the Columbian Exposition, the Chicago Wheel. Modern fairgoers might be more familiar with the attraction’s other name, the Ferris Wheel.
One of the engineers who traveled to Chicago to help design the Expo was a thirty-two-year-old bridge builder for the railroad named George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Ferris received word of the challenge issued by the Fair organizers to design an attraction that would dwarf the splendor of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, a city that had already hosted four previous World’s Fairs, including the most recent event in 1889, which is the year the Eiffel Tower was completed. Though the concept Ferris had in mind would pale in comparison to the Tower’s 915-foot high viewing platform, it would have a distinct advantage. The Chicago Wheel would rotate in a circle adding a new dimension and greater thrill designs to the act of aerial observation.
The problems George faced are the same many observation wheel designers face today: how to build a wheel larger than any previously built, how to get permission to build at the desired location, how to finance such a gigantic undertaking, etc. George actually wanted to build a 300-foot wheel but it was decided 300 feet would not be much better than 250 so the plans were scaled down.
Once complete, the Chicago Ferris wheel would be a marvel of modern engineering and steel forging. It rotated around a seventy-ton axle manufactured by the famed Bethlehem Steel Company of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and could accommodate 2,160 passengers at one time. The passengers enjoyed each 20-minute ride in the comfort of one of the wheel’s forty hanging chairs, each of which held sixty passengers. For this short ride and spectacular view, each passenger paid $.50, which at the time must have seemed rather expensive.
After the 1893 Fair, the wheel was relocated to another area of Chicago, where it remained until it was once again disassembled and shipped to St. Louis, MO so it could thrill visitors to the 1904 World’s Fair. Once this ended, the wheel was scrapped, but not before the device could form a lasting legacy in the realm of fairs, carnivals, and city amusement rides. In 1895, the Chicago Wheel’s 264 feet height was surpassed by the newly constructed 308 feet tall Great Wheel in London, England, which itself was soon dwarfed by the 328 foot Grande Roue in Paris. The race for Ferris Wheel supremacy was on!
As we continue into the 21st Century, we can expect to see the classic Ferris or observation wheel maintain its place in fairs and amusement parks around the world. But we will likely see more innovative and grander designs erected in cities around the world. New York City, Orlando, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada are all planning spectacular rides hoping to restore the grandeur of the Ferris Wheel to its home nation. But the competition is still as cities such as Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Kolkata, India and Shanghai, China have their own projects in the works. What the future holds for the humble observation wheel no one can say for sure, but one must speculate that somewhere in the world today, there is someone dreaming of the first observation wheel on the Moon, or perhaps on Mars.
